The diffraction imaging technology introduced in order to replace technology of producing diffraction unmigrated stack with sub-sequent post-stack migration. In order to successfully implement Diffraction imaging technology we should first separate reflection and diffraction wavefield in prestack domain and than create Diffraction Energy attribute and Diffraction Coherency attribute.
The process based on MultiFocusing formula that allows separation of diffraction and reflection energy by similarity factor of two radii: radius of curvature of the wave-front (R1) and radius of curvature of reflected surface (R2). The algorithm focuses the diffraction location and defocusing reflection energy.
Diffraction imaging engine implements calculates semblance of diffraction energy in seismic prestack data and create a database of coherency values corresponding to each sample of output volume. In other words, the algorithm focuses the diffraction location and defocusing reflection energy. The attribute identify apexes diffraction waves and as such corresponds to disturbance in the wave-field and can allow identifying discontinuities such as faults, fractures, pinch outs and small scattering objects.
Input to this application should be prestack seismic gathers after reflection attenuation process in order to minimize false identification of reflection energy.
