Vertical Seismic Profiling or VSP

It is an important stage in exploration seismic technology. VSP has significant advantage compared to the conventional seismic acquisition and/or processing. The main objective of carrying out a VSP is to correlate the well data to seismic data unlike the measured sonic log and density logs from the bore hole seismic and derive the synthetic seismogram to measure the correlation between the seismic and well information.

In VSP acquisition, sources are placed on the surface and the receivers are lowered along the vertical axis or depth axis. Depending on the requirements and objectives of the survey, we carry out various methods of VSP acquisition. They are chiefly

Zero offset VSP

Offset VSP

Walk away VSP etc.

Each got it's pros and cons. In the data acquisition, we measure the downgoing and upgoing wavefields passing through the sub surface.
