Import stratigraphy

A stratigraphy (stratigraphic column) describes the geological zones of a project, each with a name, an age and a display colour. g-Space reads a stratigraphic column from an .xml file. This topic covers importing that column into a project. Import is one-directional: stratigraphies are loaded from XML, there is no matching export.

Purpose

Load a stratigraphic column into the project so that geological zones and their ages are available for age-based colouring of markers, logs and cross-sections. The imported column is added to the project stratigraphy set and can be made the default. A stratigraphy may hold several nested columns that represent successive levels of the hierarchy (era, period, stage, and so on).

Launching the import

In the Data manager, right-click the Stratigraphy node and choose Load from XML. The same menu also offers Load default, which loads the built-in International Stratigraphic Chart, and Clear.

Step-by-step

  1. Right-click the Stratigraphy node and select Load from XML.
  2. In the file dialog, set the filter to XML files (*.xml) and choose the stratigraphic column file.
  3. The column is read: each zone contributes its name, age and colour, and any nested sub-columns are preserved as hierarchy levels.
  4. When prompted, confirm or edit the Stratigraphy name. The name must be unique within the project; the file name is offered as the default.
  5. The stratigraphy appears under the Stratigraphy node and is set as the current (default) column, refreshing age-based colouring across the project.

Notes

  • The XML file must contain a Content / Elements tree of columns; each column carries a Header name and a list of zones, and each zone provides a Name, an Age and an optional Color (R, G, B).
  • A file with no readable columns is rejected, and a name that already exists must be changed before the import completes.
  • Stratigraphy handling is part of the geological interpretation license; the action reports that it is unavailable when that license is not present.
